Day 26

I have been faithful to my efforts as I write this post! I have made some Throw Pillows using the same method as the Tote Bag posted 10 days ago.

What I am loving about reusing these bags to make functional items is that there is no waste. For example, I use the scraps from the pillows and bags for the stuffing in the pillows. How great is that!!

This last weekend Bob and I spent some time with another couple who really do their part in trying to live sustainably! They recycle, reuse, thrift, compost, buy local, they even have a motorhome that runs on propane! Anyway, we got to talking about this blog of mine...and we started discussing consumerism and how it is really great that there are more products and materials out in the world that are considered "Green" or "Eco" but what about the stuff that we already have here on planet earth? Should we just toss out all the bad things, put them in a landfill? Or should we use what we have till it literally desinigrates and then we can make and consume materials that are more friendly? Should we dilute or toss things at full strength?

One word for you lovely: AWESOME! Your posts are great!! I love the throw pillows, I love the tote bags....so eco-chic! Well done. You are such an inspiration!

As for your question....I think we should reuse what we have here on the planet as much as possible. Dumping all the crap that is NOT sustainable into a landfill contradicts the movement to shape up our consumer-centric, earth-taxing behaviors. Along these lines, I, for the first time in many years, want a xmas tree for the winter holidays. My problem is that I can't justify cutting down a little tree for my own personal pleasure. Nor can I justify buying a 'fake' xmas decoration (fake tree)...so I found someone who was getting rid of their fake tree and made it my own. Now this little faux-tree will live a long long life in my house. Is it weird to have a fake tree...yes. But it felt great to meet my own personal desire w/o hurting my beloved planet. I am not buying any decorations....only using the old school stuff I've saved over the last 33 years.

Thank you for the thought provoking question. Your commitment to this movement is inspiring! I found a few more links for making bags from old plastic bags....check these out:

On this one: scroll down to find the cool woven bag made from strips of plastic:

Wow, those pillows are not only cool and eco but water resistant. Might be good for a Buddy bed, no?

As for your question, I think we should reuse what we can, until it disintegrates, and make sure we are disposing of things so that others might have a chance to make our trash a treasure. Just like Jennifer did with the tree. It helps when creatives like you show us what we can do with stuff, too!!
